A chirped FBG has a Bragg period that varies linearly along the grating length, instead of staying constant as in a uniform FBG. This gives it a much wider reflection bandwidth and introduces controlled dispersion (time delay vs. wavelength) across that band.
Chirp rates from 0.01 nm/cm to 30 nm/cm are available, producing reflection bandwidths from 2 nm up to 50 nm depending on grating length (2–50 mm) and chirp rate.
Common uses include gain flattening for EDFAs and ASE light sources, band-stop filtering, mode-locked ultrafast fiber lasers, high-power laser systems, and chromatic dispersion compensation in telecom links.
