Femtosecond lasers can write gratings directly through the fiber's protective coating, into virtually any optically transparent fiber material — without stripping the coating first or needing to recoat afterward. This preserves the fiber's original mechanical strength.
Because the coating is never removed, the fiber retains its full mechanical strength through the grating region, which is important in strain-sensing applications where the fiber itself is under load.
